The "RELIANCE COACH" STUD HACKNEY and HACKNEYCROSSES
Raúl Aquerreta started breeding
hackneys in 1990 with the object of producing horses for pleasure driving and
competition. His success with hackneys in Combined Driving, especially with the
stallion Greenmeadow´s Apache (Alf), has demonstrated that the Hackney has the
qualities necessary for success in this challenging sport. His aim is to breed
the type of horse that Don Miguel Alfredo Martinez de Hoz drove to his RELIANCE
coach in the first marathon at the International Horse Show in London in 1909.
The Hackney in Argentina
Both the stallions and the mares,
were imported for the first time into Argentina, during the last years of the
decade of 1880, and studs were established in all the eastern part of the
country north of the River Plate. The "Sociedad Rural Argentina opened a
register for the breeding of Hackneys in 1905. This breed was chosen as a
ceremony horse for the country's Presidency, during many terms.

A
few argentine breeders have continued breeding with the exellent qualities that
made the Hackneys famous a 100 years ago. An elegant and advanced trotting
action has been maintained, as well as a good conformity of large bones and
solidity, to give the horses a strong resistance. Contrary to the breed in other
countries, the argentine Hackneys have not been selected as show horses, and
they are the most true outliving representatives of the Yorkshire and Norfolk
roadsters of a century ago.
